The physiology of active older citizens resembles that of younger people, a recent study on the effects of exercise on aging has found out. The research has found that we tend to consider that it is inevitable that the body will experience physical decline as years advance. The truth in fact, is that aging depends to a large degree on the person and their physical care and activities.
The process of aging is still remains mysterious. For instance, several scientific research have demonstrated that many cellular processes decline in undesirable manners as people grow older. However, science has not yet been able to define whether these changes are a result of the passage of time or whether they are in part affected by lifestyle, which means that they are mutable. This is particularly true when it comes to inactivity. Older people tend to stay quite sedentary. The study carried out by scientists at the King’s College London and the University of Birmingham have decided to go for a different approach. They eliminated inactivity as a factor of their study by considering the health of people who were quite active.
The researchers want to understand how the body reacts with age. To accomplish this, they have recruited 41 women and 85 men between the age of 55 and 79. These people had a common physical activity: cycling. The study found that in almost all aspects these people did not show their age. Various test results in terms of reflexes, metabolic health, balance and memory showed that it was not so different from younger people.
