Crossfit which is a conditioning and strength program initially designed for the military and the police force has now become a fitness craze. Crossfit programs include endless push ups, rope climbs, burpees and are not for the faint hearted. However, followers of the program show impressive levels of fitness and reductions in body fat as well as increases in muscle mass. Since crossfit programs are conducted in a group environment, most followers say that they are inspired by their team members progress, which helps them push through a workout. If you are a newbie to crossfit, follow the tips below to stay safe during and after your first few workouts.
Start small
Remember to leave your ego at the door and start small. For example, If you’re doing your first box jump, reach for a 12 inch box instead of the 24.
Form, form, form
Make sure you maintain good form at all costs. This will ensure you hit the right muscles and reduce injury. If you are unsure, always ask your trainer.
Start slow
WODs (workout of the day) are time based, but don’t rush through it. Check your form and if the weight is too heavy, lower it.
Log your progress
Ensure you log your reps and your weight at each session. This will ensure you keep progressing.
Look the part
Make sure you scan through your WOD before each session. This way you will know what you need to wear before hand. You will usually need – tights, compression socks, workout gloves, sports bra and cross fit trainers.
